Battle AGAINST Autism Blog

Welcome and thanks for taking the time to check out our new blog and all that BAA hopes to offer families in our Baton Rouge community and the surrounding areas. For those of you who are unfamiliar with BAA, you can read about our mission on our home page.

Another welcome addition to the site is a new community forum!  We are excited to offer this resource to educate and inspire readers. We hope it will be a source of information and support for families who have been touched by Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our members will include parents, caregivers, and a guest panel of professionals in the field of autism and related disorders.

If you would like to become a member of the forum, please enter your information to subscribe on our home page or email us at

I have wanted to attempt this blog thing for as long as I can remember. I am not a professional blogger so forgive me for all the mistakes I know I will make.  Being the mom of an ASD kid will surely provide plenty of relevant subject matter for this blog and if I am really lucky, some of you will find it an enjoyable read.

Feeling Grateful for 2 STEPS BACK

When you have kids, every day is a chance to see them grow and develop skills that will help them be the best they can be. You may have a child that for the most part, encounters very few road blocks in their development. Or you may have a child that floats in the sea of named disorders that never really captures the unique set of struggles they face daily. Regardless of where your child is in their development, you can ask any parent and they will tell you that ONE STEP FORWARD is the universally preferred direction. Progress is empowering for you and your child. The YIPPEEs and WOO HOOs of life is a sweet sound that celebrates your child's accomplishments and hard work. It ALWAYS deserves a remix….So let me be grateful for that.

There is another sound and another direction. And it tends to get a bad rap. I'm talking about the muffled chorus of the TWO STEPS BACK. Whether it is a well-deserved promotion that doesn't come to fruition or an unforeseeable event that undermines your child's best efforts, most people have encountered it in some aspect of their lives. And to be honest, without its existence, Forward would not be Forward. It would just be Still….So let me be grateful for that.

Gratitude can be hard to muster. Especially when you are facing an unwelcome regression that threatens to derail your child's development. It is hard to watch your child falter or see an undesirable behavior that you thought was gone from your child's daily repertoire, rear its ugly head. Even harder is finding the strength to say, "Thank you, may I have another?" after regression sucker punches you. What I HAVE found much easier to say includes a K and a YOU but it has nothing to do with being thankful. The inner Mama Bear emerges….So let me be grateful for that.

I wish I could say that I have it all figured out and rise to the challenge on every occasion, but I don't so I won't. My failures are just too numerous to count. In fact, it is only through divine grace that I can reach inside and find the courage to announce last call at the pity party I find myself throwing in honor of 2 STEPS BACK. Only then am I able to get my head out of my a** and find some perspective….So let me be grateful for that.

If you are facing obstacles as you and your child continue with ONE STEP FORWARD, I hope you know that inside you carry all the gratitude and perspective you need for 2 STEPS BACK to be nothing more than a vague memory of just another direction….So let us ALL be grateful for that.
